Yavneh College celebrated ‘A Taste of Purim’ on Friday, 22 February, when the Elsternwick campus was transformed into Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory! Students were greeted by a crowd of Oompaloompahs, ‘golden tickets’, Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka himself. Walking through the arch of balloons and a forest of bubbles, one reached the magic elevator and a field-sized chocolate fountain. Candy canes and larger-than-life lollies littered the basketball courts.
As if that was not enough, the campus was once again transformed on Sunday, 24 February, for Yavneh’s Purim Spectacular. In addition to two megillah readings, the 500-strong crowd was treated to many attractions. Featuring pony rides, fire eaters, interactive puppet shows, swing rides, a climbing wall, a huge inflatable slide, drumming sessions, art and craft stalls, a live band and food stalls, there was something for everyone at this wonderful Purim carnival.
The Beit Midrash Minyan’s ‘Purim on a Boat’ function set sail on Purim night along the calm waters of the Yarra. With an array of pirates, sailors, Popeye characters and sharks, 120 guests began the night with megillah reading and havdalah, before getting into the swing of things with a Purim party to remember.
The BMM Committee is looking forward to holding many more functions in 2013 to continue fostering a social environment for the younger members of the Mizrachi community.
